Welcome to Scotland (Rest and Recovery day at Norton House and Spa)
On your arrival at Edinburgh airport a local taxi company will take you to Norton House and Spa to rest and recover.
A welcome Scottish afternoon tea will be served that includes whisky infused delicacies, including Dundee Cake and Cranachan Meringue. Perfectly combined with a walk around 55 acres of spectacular grounds.
We begin our tour this morning, departing from our various pickup points bound for the Royal Mile in Edinburgh’s ancient old town, and Holyrood Palace.
Holyrood is the magnificent royal residence in Edinburgh, full of beautiful furnishings and artwork, with history around every corner.
We will enjoy the sights of Holyrood, as well as the splendid architecture of the new Scottish Parliament buildings before boarding our coach for the short drive along the Royal Mile to the famed ‘Witchery’ restaurant at Edinburgh Castle. A famous landmark in the city and our first food experience here in Scotland. Along the way, take in the sights of Edinburgh, one of the most unique, cultured and picturesque cities in Europe.
After enjoying lunch at the Witchery at Edinburgh castle, we will board our luxury coach once more to drive out of the city to the famous and renowned Glenkinchie Whisky Distillery for our first experience of Scotch whisky distilling with all the Scots culture and lore that surrounds it. We will tour the distillery and taste some of Scotland’s finest drams before leaving for the short drive back to our first overnight in Edinburgh at the impressive Radisson Blu Hotel in the heart of the city.
After a full Scottish breakfast in the fine surroundings of the Radisson Blu Hotel, we will board our coach bound for Saint Andrews, the ancient city by the sea and the fabled home of golf.Read More
Once there, we will enjoy a coach tour of the city to see the sights of this landmark town including the famed ‘Old Course’ the home of golf, before disembarking in the mediaeval center where we will tour the ancient castle and explore the ruins of the cathedral perched on the cliffs above the sea.
Take time to explore Saint Andrews with its shops and cafes. Wander through the ancient University area, taking in the culture of this ancient place – and perhaps enjoy some lunch at a place of your choosing before we meet up again for the drive back to Edinburgh and the wonderful Balmoral Hotel around mid-afternoon. We will arrive back at the Balmoral in plenty of time to allow you the chance to unwind and relax before our evening’s entertainment at the famous ‘Taste of Scotland’ show at Prestonfield House.
At Prestonfield, we will enjoy dinner at 7pm followed by an award winning show that will delight all of us and showcase the best of Scottish culture in music, song and dance. A night to remember.
Enjoy our final Scottish breakfast at the Radisson Blu before leaving Edinburgh to drive north to arguably one of the greatest ancient strongholds in the British Isles, the famed Stirling Castle, just over an hour away.Read More
Before the union with England, Stirling Castle was one of the most used of the Scottish royal residences, and several kings and Queens of Scotland have been crowned here. Perched high on a hill in Stirling, we will enjoy a guided tour of this most impressive castle in all its splendor – we may even meet several characters from Scotland’s past on the tour! Lunch will be available at the Unicorn Café in the castle.
After reliving history in Stirling, we will drive west toward the beautiful Loch Lomond National Park and the wonderful Cameron House Hotel, our next overnight stay, situated at the shores of the lake. Enjoy and unwind in this beautiful and historic resort. Stroll by the famed shores of Loch Lomond or enjoy a quiet drink in the whisky bar before we enjoy dinner together at The Boathouse, a beautiful restaurant on the lakeshore and marina with views out across Loch Lomond.
After a full Scottish breakfast at Cameron House, we will take a relaxing and peaceful morning on the shores of Loch Lomond. Enjoy the spa, or walk by the lake before leaving late morning on our coach, bound for the port city of Oban, the gateway to the Hebrides.
We will stop on the way for lunch at the ‘Real Food café’, a popular foodie stop on the route to the coast and the CalMac ferry to the Isle of Mull – the stunningly beautiful island and our next destination.
Once at the port city of Oban, we will board the Caledonian MacBrayne ship for the 45 minute sailing to the Isle of Mull, passing through the Sound of Mull and some really spectacular scenery including the lighthouse in the Sound and Duart Castle, home of Clan McLean. Food and snacks are available on the crossing, as we sit down to watch the Scottish coastline glide by. Once on the island, we will drive north to the beautiful village of Tobermory, our next overnight destination, and the Tobermory Hotel – a smaller, but cozy venue built out from several 18th century fishing cottages.
After enjoying our Scottish breakfast, we leave Tobermory to discover the beauty of the Isle of Mull en route to Iona. On the way, we will stop for photo ops at many of the breath-taking scenes we will pass including the view of Ben More across the bay, the glens, the lakes, the highland cattle and much more.
Mull is a dramatic island, as you will discover.
We will arrive at Fionnphort, the village at the edge of Mull and the gateway to Iona mid to late morning, and will board the small ferry for the 10 minute crossing as foot passengers to Iona. We will leave the coach behind on Mull as no cars are permitted on Iona, which adds to the peaceful beauty of this special place. – Once on the island, we will enjoy a wonderful gourmet lunch at the Argyll Hotel, just a short walk from the ferry jetty, where our lunch will be prepared with the freshest of organic ingredients grown in the gardens on the island. After lunch, we are free to roam and discover this ancient place. The Iona Abbey is just a few minutes stroll along the path where we can discover the rich history begun by St. Columba in the 6th century. The beaches and views on this tiny island are also breath-taking, so breathe it in, and enjoy!
After a second night in Tobermory, we will enjoy breakfast and free time in this scenic seaside town this morning. Shop, relax, enjoy a coffee and explore this colorful village.
We will also tour the Tobermory Whisky Distillery this morning for those who are interested in experiencing a true island distillery with all its peat smoked flavors.
Following our relaxing morning in Tobermory we will then enjoy lunch and hospitality at the hotel once more before boarding our coach to leave for Duart Castle, an hour away, close to the ferry. Duart Castle was built in the 13th century and is home to Clan Mclean. The current Chief of the clan still lives there, and the castle is an authentic example of Scottish Island architecture and history. Once there, we will explore the castle and museum and enjoy an ‘afternoon tea’ in the splendid surroundings before making the short journey to catch the ferry back to the Scottish mainland from where we will travel back to Edinburgh and our final overnight stop at the wonderful Norton House Hotel – another superb day!
The location of Norton House, which is very peaceful and regal, is amazingly only five minutes from Edinburgh Airport, and this makes our journey to the terminal this morning very easy.
Judith will pre-arrange pickups determined by your flight time as we say goodbye to Scotland after a wonderful week of Scottish heritage, hospitality and discovery – slaite!
