Dining at the Butler House in Kilkenny

When you travel to Ireland one of the amazing things is the ability to enjoy delicious food in historic places. One of my favorite dining experiences this year was at the Butler House and Garden’s in Kilkenny. When you walk along the main street medieval mile in Kilkenny and gaze at the magnificent Castle, it’s easy to miss the hidden gardens and the charming Butler House. The House is the former Dower House of the Kilkenny Castle, and dates back to 1786. The beautiful gardens and house are lovingly maintained and ran by the Kilkenny Civic Trust, allowing history not only to be preserved but experienced by everyone. Our dining experience was delightful and the flavors were brought alive by the ambience and charm of our dining room setting;… with a view of Kilkenny Castle may I add? The salmon entrée featured was laden with fresh garden vegetables (including artichoke, tomato’s and garnished with pea sprouts).

Our dessert was served on vintage china, and the Pistachio ice-cream with thick caramel, delicate meringue was refreshing and light. After dinner I also got to tour the bedrooms that are carefully being renovated and restored to honor it’s rich historic past.

Kilkenny’s new Medieval Mile Museum is another successful undertaking for the Kilkenny Civic trust. The Butler’s of Ormonde owned Kilkenny Castle from 1391 to 1967 and this history is one of the greatest gifts to Ireland’s heritage.

Next summer our Southern Elegance Tour May 25th to June 2nd will include a return to dine at the wonderful Butler House and tour the famous Kilkenny Castle!
